It is the sequel to Titanfall (2014) and the first game in the series to feature a dedicated single-player campaign.

The campaign follows Jack Cooper, a rifleman in the Frontier Militia who is forced to take on the role of a Pilot after his mentor, Tai Lastimosa, is killed in battle. Cooper bonds with Lastimosa's Titan, BT-7274, and the two work together to stop the IMC from using a superweapon called the Fold Weapon against the Militia's home planet, Harmony. The campaign runs roughly six to eight hours and is widely regarded as one of the best single-player campaigns in the shooter genre, with levels that each introduce a distinct mechanical concept, including a time-shifting level that lets Cooper swap between two versions of the same environment.

Pilot movement is the defining feature of moment-to-moment gameplay. Wall-running, double-jumping, and sliding chain together to create a freeform traversal system that rewards players who maintain momentum. Titan combat shifts the experience entirely, putting players inside one of six distinct Titan classes, each with its own weapons, abilities, and playstyles. Titans are earned during multiplayer matches by completing actions on the ground, rewarding active play rather than simply waiting for a timer.

Multiplayer features a range of modes built around the interplay between Pilot and Titan combat on maps designed to support both scales of movement. The game launched with all post-release maps, modes, and most DLC provided free to all players, with only cosmetic items sold separately. Titanfall 2 holds a Metacritic score of 86.
