About Tower Unite
Tower Unite is a virtual world party game developed and published by PixelTail Games. It entered Steam Early Access in April 2016 and reached its full 1.0 release on April 19, 2025, following one of the longer Early Access runs on the platform. The concept originated in 2009 as GMod Tower, a popular mod for Garry's Mod built on the Source engine. When technical limits of that engine and the mod format became a barrier to further growth, the developers founded PixelTail Games in 2015 to rebuild the concept as a standalone title on Unreal Engine 4, funded through a developer grant from Epic Games and a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.
The core of the experience is The Plaza, a resort-styled virtual hub packed with activities: minigolf across themed courses spanning dinosaur lands, candy lands, snowy mountains, and even space, a casino with card and table games, an arcade with over 30 unique multiplayer-capable games, bowling, laser tag, bumper cars, fishing, trivia, and a nightclub with Soundcloud and YouTube integration for shared music listening. Players can also purchase and customize their own condo, a fully personal space that can be decorated with furniture, props, and interactive toys, and opened up to friends for private hangouts and parties.
Steam Workshop integration lets players create and share custom content, including player models, props, vehicles, and condo layouts, using the COLLADA format for 3D assets. Units, the in-game currency, are earned through Plaza activities and minigames and used to purchase items and cosmetics, with no microtransactions or subscriptions of any kind built into the game as a deliberate design choice, a stance the developers have maintained throughout the game's entire lifespan.
Game Worlds expand beyond The Plaza with dedicated multiplayer modes, including Virus, a mode inspired by TimeSplitters 2 where an infected player attempts to spread infection to survivors, and its Horde variant, which replaces human infected with continuously spawning AI enemies and can be played solo. Other Game Worlds include Ball Race, Accelerate, and Zombie Massacre, with two further worlds, Planet Panic and Horror Hill, currently in development.
Tower Unite continues to receive regular free updates from PixelTail Games, who have confirmed ongoing development alongside expansion into new projects.
