About Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 is a first-person looter shooter developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. It was released on September 18, 2012, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, following the unexpected success of the original Borderlands. The game was built on Unreal Engine 3 with a budget of $30 to 35 million, a significant jump from the first game's more modest development.

Set five years after the events of the original, the story follows a new group of Vault Hunters who arrive on Pandora believing they're headed toward a fresh Vault to explore. The train they're riding turns out to be a trap set by Handsome Jack, the CEO of Hyperion, who has since declared himself dictator of the planet and taken sole credit for the discovery and defeat of the previous game's Vault monster. Surviving the ambush, the new Vault Hunters wake up in the Arctic Wasteland and are guided by a mysterious ally known as the Guardian Angel, who directs them to free the four original Vault Hunters from Hyperion custody. All four return as NPCs who play a role in the story and offer optional side content throughout.

Players choose from four playable characters at launch: Axton the Commando, Maya the Siren, Salvador the Gunzerker, and Zer0 the Assassin, each with their own skill trees and combat style. A fifth character, Gaige the Mechromancer, was added post-launch. Combat carries over the procedurally generated loot system from the first game, now expanded with distinct manufacturer identities for weapons, giving brands like Bandit, Dahl, Hyperion, and Torgue their own visual style and mechanical quirks rather than just differing stats. Elemental damage was also reworked, with enemies now taking reduced damage from elements they resist rather than being trivially countered by matching damage types.

The world of Pandora is expanded well beyond the first game's scope, spanning jungles, deserts, and urban wastelands filled with bandits, wildlife, and Hyperion's robotic forces. Optional side quests and multiple-choice missions add replay value alongside the main story, and a trading interface lets players exchange or wager items directly with each other. The game holds a Metacritic score of 89 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
