About Borderlands 4
Borderlands 4 is a first-person looter-shooter developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games. It was released on September 12, 2025, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, peaking at 304,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch and setting a new franchise record. Borderlands 4 holds a Metacritic score of 81.
The game is set on Kairos, a new planet controlled by the Timekeeper, a tyrannical ruler who maintains order through cybernetic implants called Bolts embedded in the population. Players arrive as crash-landed Vault Hunters and must work to free the planet from the Timekeeper's grip across an open-zone campaign.
Four new Vault Hunters are available: Vex the Siren, Rafa the Exo-Soldier, Harlowe the Gravitar, and Amon the Forgeknight. Each brings a distinct set of active abilities and a different playstyle, with class synergies built into the co-op design.
The core looter-shooter loop returns with an expanded weapon system. Guns now carry specific manufacturer parts from factions including Vladof and Maliwan, adding greater variety to how individual weapons behave beyond their base stats. New traversal mechanics, wall climbing, gliding, double jumping, and swimming, are available from the start and used throughout exploration and combat across Kairos.
Post-campaign content includes Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode with harder enemies and better drop quality, weekly contracts across the open world, and Moxxi's Big Encore Machine, a system that lets players farm defeated bosses without reloading saves. Invincible boss encounters targeting endgame players were added in post-launch updates.

The Timekeeper is the main antagonist of Borderlands 4 and the tyrannical ruler of Kairos. Control over the planet's population is maintained through cybernetic implants called Bolts and a synthetic military force. The events of the game center on the Vault Hunters' effort to dismantle that control and free Kairos from the Timekeeper's grip.
Post-campaign content includes Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, which increases enemy difficulty and improves loot drop quality. Weekly contracts challenge players to complete activities across the open world of Kairos for ongoing rewards.
