The game began as planned DLC for Dying Light 2: Stay Human before expanding in scope and scope into a standalone release. Owners of the Dying Light 2: Stay Human Ultimate Edition received it at no extra cost.

The game bridges the narrative gap between the original Dying Light (2015) and Dying Light 2: Stay Human (2022) and brings back Kyle Crane, protagonist of the original, who has spent the thirteen years between titles as a captive of a figure known as The Baron. Subjected to prolonged experimentation that has physically altered him, Crane escapes and pursues vengeance across Castor Woods, the game's open-world setting.

The Beast draws its core gameplay from the original Dying Light, with fluid parkour traversal and melee-focused combat forming the foundation. Crane's years of experimentation have produced new abilities tied to his altered physiology, expanding his combat and traversal options beyond those available in the first game. New zombie types engineered by The Baron's experiments populate the world alongside the infected familiar from the series.

The campaign supports solo play and online co-op. The main story runs approximately 18 to 20 hours, with side activities, night zones, and collectibles extending playtime significantly. Post-launch updates have added New Game Plus, Legend levels, and Nightmare Difficulty. Dying Light: The Beast holds a Metacritic score of 79 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
