About Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an action RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It was released for PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024, with the PC version arriving on Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 23, 2025, roughly a year later, with Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 arriving on June 3, 2026. It is the second entry in a three-part project remaking the original 1997 Final Fantasy VII, following Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020), with the story and scenario written by Kazushige Nojima under creative director Tetsuya Nomura.
Set immediately after the events of Remake, the story follows Cloud Strife and the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE as they leave the confines of Midgar and set out across the wider Planet in pursuit of Sephiroth, the legendary former SOLDIER whose return threatens the world. Where Remake was largely confined to a single city, Rebirth opens the game up into a semi-open world spanning multiple interconnected regions, including the Junon Region, Corel, Gongaga, and Cosmo Canyon, each explorable on foot or riding a Chocobo for faster traversal.
Combat builds on Remake's hybrid system, blending real-time action with the Active Time Battle system, letting players pause the flow of combat to issue commands, cast magic, and use items across the full party. Synergy Abilities let two characters combine their moves for a stronger combined attack, a mechanic the development team designed around the story's core theme of bonds between the party members. Each character plays distinctly, including quadrupedal party member Red XIII and Cait Sith, who alternates between fighting solo and riding his Moogle doll mount.
Odd Jobs return as a way to learn more about the people in each region and strengthen relationships between Cloud and his companions, and minigames make a substantial comeback throughout, including an entirely new card game called Queen's Blood that can be built into a custom deck and improved by finding new cards during exploration. Chadley, an intern for Shinra's Research and Development Division, guides players through world-clearing activities involving Mooglets, Chocobo taming, and enemy-filled lairs used to create new materia.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth won more than 40 Game of the Year awards following its console launch and holds a Metacritic score of 90. The PC version adds keyboard and mouse support, DLSS upscaling, variable refresh rate compatibility, and configurable texture and background detail settings, alongside Steam Deck compatibility.
