About Need for Speed Heat

Need for Speed Heat is a racing game developed by Ghost Games and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on November 8, 2019, for PC via the EA app, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It was the final Need for Speed title developed by Ghost Games before the studio was restructured into EA Gothenburg. Post‑launch support and future entries in the franchise were handled by Criterion Games.

The story follows a street racer newly arrived in Palm City who gets caught up with siblings Lucas and Ana Rivera as they navigate the city's underground scene and its ongoing conflict with the local police force, led by Lieutenant Frank Mercer. During the day, players compete in the Speedhunters Showdown, a legitimate racing exhibition that earns Bank for customizing and upgrading cars. At night, the same streets turn into illegal racing territory, earning Rep and drawing the attention of a rogue police task force whose response escalates the longer a player stays out. Getting caught during a police pursuit risks losing that session's earned Rep entirely, while making it back to a safehouse multiplies the reward.

Car customization runs deep, covering body kits, spoilers, wheels, underglow, air suspension, and performance parts, alongside a full paint and wrap system for adjusting color, material, and decals. Cars unlock as players raise their Rep Level at night, with certain special edition vehicles tied to specific DLC packs or in-game events. The open world supports AllDrive sessions of up to 16 players, letting players race, roam, and get pulled into pursuits together, with an update in June 2020 adding cross-platform play between PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Need for Speed Heat launched without lootboxes, a direct response to criticism aimed at the progression system in its predecessor, Need for Speed Payback. The only paid DLC released for the game covers a time-saver pack and a pack unlocking the McLaren F1, with free updates later adding the Aston Martin DB11 Volante and a drivable version of the Polestar 1 cover car.
