The game is the sequel to the original Risk of Rain (2013), moving from 2D platforming into a fully 3D third-person perspective.

The story follows a crew of Survivors stranded on Petrichor V after their ship crashes, fighting through hostile terrain populated by increasingly dangerous alien life. Each run sends players through a series of procedurally generated stages, with the option to push forward toward the teleporter that advances to the next stage or stay behind to scavenge chests and shrines for additional items.
