It is the fourth main entry in the Borderlands series, following Borderlands 2 (2012), and a direct sequel set roughly seven years after its events.

The story follows four new Vault Hunters recruited by Lilith and the Crimson Raiders to stop Troy and Tyreen Calypso, twin streamers turned cult leaders known as the Children of the Vault, from harvesting the power of alien Vaults spread across multiple planets. For the first time in the series, the action leaves Pandora entirely, sending players across a variety of distinct worlds, including Promethea, Eden-6, and Athenas.

Players choose from four Vault Hunters at the start: Amara the Siren, who summons ethereal fists and manipulates enemies with elemental powers; FL4K the Beastmaster, who commands a loyal pet and focuses on critical hit and stealth builds; Moze the Gunner, who pilots a customizable mech called Iron Bear; and Zane the Operative, who deploys gadgets and clones for a more tactical playstyle. Each character has three distinct skill trees, allowing for a wide range of build directions per Vault Hunter.

The core loop centers on shooting, looting, and leveling across the campaign and its endgame systems. Mayhem Mode, unlocked after completing the story, adds scaling difficulty modifiers and improved loot quality across the entire game world for players looking to push their builds further. The game features over one billion procedurally generated guns with varied manufacturers, each producing weapons with distinct behaviors and firing quirks. Co-op supports up to four players online with full crossplay between Steam and the Epic Games Store on PC.

Two Season Passes were released post-launch. Season Pass 1 adds four campaign DLC packs. Season Pass 2 adds new game modes, a fourth skill tree for each Vault Hunter, and additional cosmetics. A sequel, Borderlands 4, was released on September 12, 2025. Borderlands 3 holds a Metacritic score of 81 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
