What is Attack Speed in League of Legends?

AS Definition
AS Definition

Attack speed in LoL is a core stat in League that measures auto-attack frequency. Building attack speed allows champions to fully leverage their basic attacks and remains an essential consideration in itemization and gameplay.

Attack Speed Explanation in LoL

Every champion in League of Legends has a base attack speed ratio assigned to them, representing their unmodified speed at level 1. Some champions receive bonus attack speed modifiers to alter their base ratio.

Total attack speed is comprised of two components:

Base Attack Speed - This is the champion's inherent attack speed ratio at level 1 without any bonuses. It stays fixed and does not scale.

Bonus Attack Speed - This refers to any additional attack speed gained through levels, abilities, items, runes, or other effects. It is calculated as a percentage of the base attack speed ratio. Champions with a higher ratio gain more benefits from the same bonus amount.

Bonus attack speed stacks additively, meaning each point acquired directly increases the attack speed percentage by 1:1.

However, total attack speed is capped at 2.5 attacks per second and cannot be reduced below 0.2 attacks per second through slowing effects. Certain abilities and runes can briefly exceed the 2.5 cap.
