DayZ is a multiplayer open-world survival game developed and published by Bohemia Interactive. It began as a fan-made mod for Arma 2 created by Dean Hall, which became one of the most influential mods in PC gaming history. The standalone version entered Steam Early Access on December 16, 2013, and launched in full on December 13, 2018.

The game is set in Chernarus, a fictional post-Soviet country spanning 225 square kilometers. An infection has wiped out most of the population, leaving the landscape scattered with scavenging materials, the infected, and other survivors pursuing their own goals. Players are placed into this world with no objectives, no minimap, no tutorial, and no starting equipment beyond a minimal set of items.

Survival requires managing hunger, thirst, temperature, blood loss, and disease simultaneously alongside the constant external threats of the infected and other players. Medical supplies, food, water, and clothing must all be found through scavenging. Crafting allows players to build tools, clothing, and equipment from raw materials, and base building enables the construction of more permanent shelters and storage over time.

Other players are the most unpredictable element in any session. Encounters can lead to cooperation, trade, or immediate betrayal, and the game provides no mechanics to enforce friendly behavior. Death resets all carried inventory, including everything found and crafted during that life, making every decision carry genuine weight.

The base game includes the original Chernarus map. Two additional maps, Livonia and Sakhal via the Frostline expansion, are available as separate purchases. Steam Workshop mod support is included, and an offline single-player mode is available for exploring maps without other players. DayZ holds a Mostly Positive rating on Steam.
