It's set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Monstrous creatures pour from a castle that looms over the burning city, and Trevor Belmont, the hero who defeated Dracula, goes in with his daughter Rose, armed with the Vampire Killer. Rose is soon pulled into a conspiracy hiding beneath the disaster, and she carries Dracula's curse in her right arm.
The whip is more than a weapon. You use it in fast, aggressive combat and to swing across the environment, so it works for movement as much as for fighting. Weapons come in seven categories, and Relics add offensive and defensive effects, so you can combine what you find into your own playstyle. Major bosses, including Death, Medusa, Carmilla, and new ones such as Joan of Arc, are sealed into Rose's tarot cards once you beat them. Those cards become Arcana, which give you spells and special actions. The levels mix familiar Gothic settings with new stages, and the game is single-player.
